In fairly exciting news last month, our friends at Vault.com unveiled their new Law firm diversity survey. Essentially, the survey (part of a larger diversity database on Vault) tracks the performance and advancement of minorities in over 300 law firms. What’s particularly interesting about this year’s version is that, for the first time in years, minorities showed very little advancement across the board in terms of hiring and advancement to leadership roles in firms.
Particularly troubling is that this trend seems to be occurring in law schools as well. In January of this year, the New York Times published an article about the decreasing number of minority law students, despite the increase in the number of law school seats available. This trend occurred even though minority applicant numbers had not decreased. Yikes. The articles cites the probable culprit as US News & World Report law school rankings, which place a premium on LSAT scores.
Whatever the case, it’s clear that something needs to change if law schools and law firms want to keep and maintain minority applicants and employees.
