B. The ACLU’s Jamie Lynn Crofts filed a top-notch amicus brief in support of John Oliver and HBO, who are being sued for defamation by coal baron Robert Murray. C. Charlotte School of Law, which seemed dead in the water until the Department of Education told the school it might reinstate its access to federal financial aid programs, recently hired the lobbyist Laura Maddox who helped get current secretary of education Betsy DeVos confirmed. Hmm. Bloomberg

D. Trump, who promised his deal-making prowess would usher in a new era of good relations with Russia, but has so far been having a tough time even dealing with his own party, just signed a bill that not only sanctions Russia but limits his ability to make deals with foreign powers by requiring congressional review of a president’s decision to lift sanctions. E. Science did the dang thing today-either taking a major first step in limiting disease or setting us down a path towards a Gattaca-style dystopian future–by editing the genes in a human embryo. NY Times
