How Not to Get a Letter of Recommendation

Asking for a letter of recommendation can be a harrowing experience. Then, you have to sit down in a meeting and actually ask for it. What if they respond negatively? What if they refuse to write it? What if they castigate you for your life choices and your general appearance?
